The “individual provider” search is for the single provider being an individual doctor, pharmacist, chiropractor, dentist or other provider.

The “organization” search is to locate the NPI number for a particular company (legal business entity) such as a hospital, nursing home, pharmacy, medical clinic or business association composed of one or more providers. Remember individual vs company.

General Individual Provider Search: Enter the 2-character state abbreviation, city, and last name and then click search or hit “Enter”. All spelling must be exact! If many pages are returned, click directly to the last page of the results returned. Then “single click” on the column name “provider first name” and all pages of the search will be alphabetized, making a specific provider much easier to locate.

If you wish to find all the individual providers or organizations in a specific city: just search on that city without a specific provider name being entered. The NPI Search Engine will return all individual providers or organizations with a business location in that city. If multiple pages are returned click directly to the last page of the results returned. You may then “single click” on the column name “provider last name” and all pages of the search will be alphabetized, making a specific provider much easier to locate. This is great for smaller town searches.

Organization Search: Due to the smaller number of Organizations, you may wish to just use the zip code only for a search. If this not effective then an actual city request may be used. If the area is too large, then the name can also be searched on. Exact spelling of the name is not required in this field only.
